YC Verbs Positioning
Explain what your company does (verbs/outcomes) instead of what it is (nouns/categories). "We help teams ship faster" lands; "We're a cloud platform for AI" glazes eyes.
Eli Mernit (@mernit), CEO of Beam, shared YC advice: pitch with verbs instead of nouns. Counterexample: "We're building a cloud platform for AI" → blank stares (Beam is a cloud platform for AI). Reframing around actions changed comprehension. Source: X/@mernit, 2026-06-10 — 2,965 likes, 2,824 bookmarks.
Platform details now live in Beam Cloud; this page stays focused on the positioning rule. The useful rhetorical lesson is that a technically correct category label can still fail because the listener has to infer the job, buyer, and outcome.
Noun vs verb (examples)
| Noun-first (weak) | Verb-first (strong) |
|---|---|
| "AI agent infrastructure platform" | "We deploy persistent workers that finish your GitHub issues overnight" |
| "Personal knowledge wiki" | "We compile everything you bookmark into a searchable brain your agents read first" |
| "Cloud platform for AI" | "We run your models on dedicated machines with one API" |
| "Design system tool" | "We turn your brand rules into markdown your coding agent follows" |

Why it works
Category nouns force the listener to infer value. Verbs anchor on jobs the buyer already wants — ship, automate, debug, convert, hire, comply. Aligns with Services-as-Software: sell the work (autopilot), not the tool bucket.
Stack fit (Kevin)
- Dedalus Machines - Positioning & Pitch / Agent Machines — lead outreach with outcome verbs (deploy workers, run sandboxes), not "agent infrastructure."
- Cloud, Data, and Service Skills — credential lines stay noun-heavy; add verb clause in second sentence for cold email.
- Wiki pages — internal pages use concrete nouns (RESOLVER); external copy stays verb-led.
- Agent prompts — when drafting landing pages, reject hero lines that are only category labels.
