Texture & Grain Resources

Free texture packs (halftone, grain, paper, noise) and the layering technique that uses them, so UI and illustration read with depth and tactility instead of flat, AI-generic gradients.

Texture is the single highest-engagement design asset in Kevin's bookmark corpus — a "textures I use on my illustrations" post drew 24,470 likes and 19,589 bookmarks — and the theme recurs across multiple free-pack shares. The reason is anti-flatness: grain, halftone, and paper imperfection are the cheapest way to make a surface feel made rather than generated. Source: X/@mithsd_, 2026-03-14

Local media review preserved four concrete samples from the @mithsd_ post: a black-on-white halftone dot gradient, a black scratched/grit overlay, a dark high-contrast halftone screen, and an off-white paper/plaster texture with crack and grit. Keep them as texture references rather than source-of-truth download links; the stable citation is still the X post and curator handle. The @AlbiaHossain black-and-white set adds two reusable monochrome overlay classes: a tight contour-line/maze texture on black with dust scratches, and a warped stripe/halftone fabric surface. These are better filed as blend-mode masks for brand/editorial backgrounds than as dev tools. The @AlbiaHossain halftone set adds two high-contrast dot-screen samples: a cropped face/hand with dense print dots and a second abstract dot-field texture with sharp light-to-dark falloff. Use these when a page needs editorial grit or zine/poster energy; keep them away from dense app surfaces where the pattern would fight text legibility. Texture types

Type Look Where it earns its keep
Grain / noise Fine film/sensor noise, dithered speckle Overlaid on gradients and large flat fills to kill banding and add depth — the core move in app-background design.
Halftone Dot or line print screens Retro-print and editorial aesthetics; comic/risograph energy; strong section dividers and accents.
Paper / riso Organic fiber, ink misregistration Warmth and hand-made feel for illustration and brand work.
Black & white overlays High-contrast monochrome masks Drop onto color via multiply / overlay / soft-light blend modes so one texture re-skins any palette.

Application: layered app backgrounds

The recurring technique for background depth is a three-layer stack: a base gradient, a blur/glow pass for soft light, then a grain/noise overlay to add tactility and remove banding. Keep the texture subtle — it should register as material, not pattern. Source: X/@yahyavision, 2026-03-28

The reviewed @yahyavision image makes the construction sequence explicit: first block large abstract color shapes, then blur them into a soft light field, then add a pixel/grain texture, then place the product UI on top. The final "Volta" screen shows why this belongs in texture resources: the background carries brand atmosphere while the foreground still has enough contrast for onboarding copy and the Apple sign-in control. Generating your own

  • Dither — open-source vector dithering with an Illustrator plugin; generate dither/halftone textures rather than sourcing static packs.
  • For texture inside a broader illustration pipeline (line work, shading), see Technical Illustration System; for the retro-dither aesthetic direction see Chudcore.
  • Bake the chosen grain into the design system as a reusable overlay token/component so it stays consistent across surfaces.
