Ownership & Agency
Ownership is accountability for outcomes across a surface. Agency is acting before you're asked - especially choosing high-impact future work (refactors, migrations, systems) instead of only squashing what's loud today.
How Kevin Uses the Words
- Ownership - the job is yours: messy middle, tribal knowledge, customer outcomes, culture - not "my JIRA column." At a startup it spans domains you didn't pick. Source: User, 2026-05-11; compiled from Ownership Drives Building, 2026-04-18
- Agency - you proactively identify problems and build solutions; you think about the future of the codebase and company, not only the ticket in front of you. High agency shows up as migrations and refactors before they become emergencies. Source: User, 2026-05-11
- Together they power Forward Deployed: maximum surface area with nobody else to hand work to - so you must own and must initiate. Source: User, 2026-05-11
Signal From Ownership Drives Building
- Ownership beats motivation transfer. "You need to believe something is your baby to want to pour everything into it. You can't transfer that belief." Source: User, 2026-04-18
- Helpers are not co-owners. "Helpers leave. Co-owners stay through the messy middle." Source: User, 2026-04-18
- The compounding move is to teach the tools and let people own their own ideas.
Where Agency Shows Up in the Wiki
- No One-Off Work - the second time the same work appears, agency means codifying it (skill / automation), not waiting to be told
- Builder Ethos - "Boil the Lake" only happens when the person doing the work has agency over the bar
- Experience over Discourse - agency means doing the thing instead of debating who should do it
- Curiosity + tribal knowledge shared effectively - learning across disciplines (billing, security, design, SEO, DevRel) and writing it down so the org compounds Source: User, 2026-05-11
The Highest-Impact Default
The daily posture that encodes agency at Dedalus: "What's the most important thing I can do today?" - aligned with Forward Deployed. Immediate fires get handled, but the default question tilts toward systems that prevent the next ten fires. Source: User, 2026-05-11
