Speed as a Strategy
Speed is not just an execution metric. At startup scale, velocity is a strategy that product parity cannot beat.
The Thesis
Most people treat shipping speed as a tax on quality, something to apologize for. Kevin treats it as a strategic asset. A 3-person team that ships what a 30-person org only plans is not winning on headcount or genius. It is winning on velocity, on the willingness to put working things in front of reality faster than anyone else. Source: compiled from Forward Deployed
Velocity compounds. Faster shipping means faster feedback, faster learning, and a longer head start on the things competitors cannot clone quickly. Builder Ethos frames the underlying shift: AI compresses execution so heavily that a feature is no longer where wins are decided. Source: Builder Ethos, 2026-04-14
Why Velocity Beats Parity
Distribution Is the Moat makes the point directly. In most software markets, products converge in capability in weeks, not years. A product feature gets cloned in a quarter; a two-year head start on distribution does not. Shipping in public, in front of people, is how that head start gets built before you need it. So speed is strategic for two reasons:
- It widens the distribution lead, which is the part that does not compress.
- It turns the team into a learning machine, because every shipped thing returns signal that an unshipped thing never will.
The Highest-Impact Version of Fast
Speed is not frantic. The forward-deployed default is not "what is on fire" but "what is the highest-impact thing I can do today." Source: Forward Deployed, 2026-05-09 Real velocity comes from building the system that makes the next ten things fast, not from sprinting through one thing manually. Fast and high-impact are the same move when you aim the speed at infrastructure instead of output.
Connections
| Connection | Implication |
|---|---|
| Craft vs Velocity | Speed only stays strategic when completeness stays cheap. Know which lakes to boil. |
| Agents as Force Multipliers | Agents are what make a single builder fast enough for velocity to become a moat. |
| Want It Bad Enough | The 3am flow state is where sustainable speed actually comes from, not from forcing pace. |
Anti-Patterns
- Confusing motion with velocity. Shipping the wrong thing fast is just fast waste.
- Treating speed as the enemy of quality, when AI has collapsed most of that tradeoff.
- Shipping in private and hoping launch day carries it. The velocity has to be visible to compound into distribution.
