The Motivation Problem

HoagieClub runs like a classic SWE org - product managers, designers, team leads, engineers - but without the extrinsic motivation of salary, equity, or benefits. Kevin identified this as the core structural challenge: it's hard to motivate people to work on something that isn't their "baby." The professional org structure assumes extrinsic motivation exists. Without it, the structure is scaffolding around nothing. private page

Kevin's solution (discussed with Cathy Di): stop trying to transfer motivation. Instead, teach the tools and let people build things they actually own. This is the thesis of Ownership Drives Building and Want It Bad Enough. private page

Hoagie Hacks

Kevin will be leading Hoagie Hacks in Fall 2026. This is a step up from member to leadership - taking ownership of the hackathon arm of the club. private page
