Arcotype Font Browser
Browse all 2,000+ Google Fonts sorted by visual similarity instead of alphabetical order.
What It Is
Arcotype is a font discovery tool built by @gabbisoong that clusters Google Fonts by visual characteristics - weight, x-height, contrast, serif style, similarity, and vibe - so designers can find alternatives to a font they like without scrolling alphabetically through 2,000+ options. The core problem: Google Fonts' default browse experience makes it hard to answer "what looks like this?" Source: X/@gabbisoong, 2026-03-24
Why It Matters
Font selection is one of the highest-impact design decisions (Kevin's Design System page notes typography as the first thing users perceive), but the discovery UX for free fonts has been broken for a decade. Arcotype fixes it with similarity-based clustering rather than metadata tags.
The 2026-07-01 video review shows the product shape: a grid of font preview cards, search for "Inter", nearby alternatives such as Geist and Bricolage Grotesque, large editable preview text, and visual browsing rather than alphabetical filtering. The live site now resolves to https://www.arcoty.pe/, is waitlist-gated, and describes search by similarity, vibe, or use case with one-click downloads. No public package, API, or release version is exposed. Source: Arcotype, checked 2026-07-01
The 2026-04-02 "font sites iceberg" image is useful because it places Arcotype deep among specialist foundries and type-discovery sources, below mainstream Google Fonts, Adobe Fonts, Dafont, Fontshare, Pangram Pangram, ABC Dinamo, Grilli Type, Klim Type, Commercial Type, Future Fonts, Fonts In Use, Dalton Maag, Florian Karsten, Wisetype, and Occupant Fonts. That makes Arcotype a taste-navigation surface for type exploration, not merely another free-font list. Source: X/@gabbisoong, 2026-04-02; Source: local image artifact review, 2026-07-03
Usage
Visit arcoty.pe or join the waitlist when access is closed. Use Arcotype during the type-selection phase of a new project: start from a familiar anchor font, browse visual neighbors, then test the short list inside the actual product before locking tokens into the Design System.
