Recordly

Free, open-source, cross-platform screen recorder + editor with motion-design polish built in — auto-zoom, cursor smoothing, styled frames, webcam bubbles — so you ship a clean demo video without sending raw footage to a motion designer.

Treat v1.3.3 as the stable install/update anchor until a non-beta v1.3.4 release exists. The reviewed X row has no local media to inspect, so the source authority is the repo, release list, README, and homepage. Source: GitHub API and git ls-remote, 2026-07-02

What it is

A desktop app (Electron) that records a display or single window and edits the capture with presentation-grade motion tooling in one place — the open-source, cross-platform answer to Screen Studio / Cap. The README's framing: "Instead of sending raw footage to a motion designer just to add zooms, cursor polish, or a styled background, Recordly handles that workflow in one place for free." Source: GitHub webadderallorg/Recordly, 2026-06-12

Platforms (native capture where possible): Source: GitHub webadderallorg/Recordly, 2026-06-12

OS Min version Capture backend
macOS 14.0+ native ScreenCaptureKit helpers
Windows 10 build 19041+ native Windows Graphics Capture (WGC) + WASAPI audio
Linux modern distros Electron capture APIs (no cursor-hiding yet)

Correction vs. the prior wiki stub: Recordly is not macOS-only — it ships native builds for macOS, Windows, and Linux. Source: GitHub webadderallorg/Recordly, 2026-06-12

Core capabilities

  • Auto-zoom + cursor polish — automatic zoom suggestions from cursor activity, plus cursor smoothing, motion blur, click bounce, sway, size control, and a loop mode for clean looping exports.
  • Styled frames — drop the capture into a padded, rounded, shadowed frame over wallpapers / solid / gradient backgrounds with optional background blur and aspect-ratio presets.
  • Webcam bubble overlay — position (presets or custom X/Y), mirror, roundness, shadow, and optional zoom-reactive scaling.
  • Timeline editing for demos — drag-and-drop zooms, trims, speed-up/slow-down regions, text/image/figure annotations, extra audio tracks, crop; saved as .recordly project files.
  • Export — MP4 and GIF (quality, frame-rate, loop, size presets, custom dimensions); reveal in file manager.
  • Extension marketplace — community extensions add click sounds, device frames, browser mockups, wallpapers, render hooks, and settings panels (marketplace.recordly.dev).

Why it's in the wiki

Surfaced when @ashtonasidhu flagged a viral "free AI desktop assistant" as a rip-off of Recordly — "you can get it free." The signal is the tool itself, not the drama: a free, OSS, motion-polished recorder is the right default for agent-workflow demos, bug-repro videos, and QA evidence. Complements the Browser Testing Skills skill and the reproduction-evidence requirement in Browser Testing Skills; pairs with HyperFrames (record the real product, then render the polished promo) and ReClip - Self-Hosted Video Downloader for clip workflows.
